Moving the Machine Room entrance   The System X space prior to System X
(07/27/2003)
Outside the power feed is being installed The racks began to arrive from Liebert the first week of August Rack assembly and prep begins CNS is called in to look at the Ethernet wiring plan
The concrete pad goes in for the main power transformer The electricians begin to map out the position of the indoor switching equipment The arduous task of creating over 600 power recepticals The electricians hard at work
With a limited amount of space,we moved some of the racks into the atrium The main transformer being placed Srinidhi makes an appearance during rack prep and talks to Josh More racks arrive weekly
8" cast iron pipe for the chilled water loop The welders keep busy These guys were working in 80+ F temperatures for 4 weeks Tent city with up to 12 welders working at once
  Wiring the transformer
Digging the trench for the chilled water pipe     Building the pads for the 125 ton chillers
Checking the drawings to make sure that everything is where it is supposed to be The power feed coming into the building Getting the additional compressors for the two floor AC units...this was not fun! Once they were off the truck it was a piece of cake moving them
Is it gonna fit? The first set of machines arrive! Jason is pallet jack challenged...he gets better later The atrium is ready for the volunteers
Kevin, Josh and Peter take a break once the stations are set up The volunteers arrive and the assembly line is humming
Jerome did a lot of racking of machines...probably 80% of them   Tom Wangler (Apple) on the phone Jerome toting a PM G5
CNS installers checking the wiring diagram With the Power Distribution Units in place, the receptical placement begins Volunteers labeling the 1700 InfiniBand cables Kevin stops by to check on progress
Two labels were placed on each end...that's 6800 labels! Installing the pumps and balast for the chilled water loop in the warehouse   Another status meeting
Pulling the feeds from the switch room located off the warehouse into the machine room...that's one inch diameter braided copper cable Pulling the power cable more than 200 feet through conduit above and below the floor...not fun.
Electricians taking a break Clarke installing the Cisco 4506s More power cable pulling
Charging the refrigerant loop for the Liebert X-treme Density cooling system More work in the power switch closet
Hunter wiring Ethernet Electricians   More refrigerant charging...is it full yet?
Another shipment arrives and we prep with the Apple folks for the volunteers to arrive   More Ethernet cabling The volunteers arrive and the line goes back into business
Ethernet ready to be terminated Jerome...
Jerome... Jerome... ...and oh yeah...Jerome The main power switch going in
The pumping equipment all in place for the chilled water loop With all the machines in place it's time to start wiring the InfiniBand Jason, Kevin, Gene and Josh...wiring InfiniBand...joy! The chillers being installed
Minnis Ridenour the VP and COO Virignia Tech Cabling, cabling, cabling
Glenda, Pat, and Lynn talking to Ian Hardy of the BBC Glenda and Srinidhi Glenda and Lynn Josh, Kevin, and Phil testing the first set of nodes
Josh working on the InfiniBand interconnect cables These were the last cables to be installed and they were the most painful to install
