William C. Dougherty, a VT alumnus, is the Assistant Director for
Systems Support in the Network Infrastructure and Services area of the
I.T. unit at VT. Systems Support is responsible for hardware and system
administration for many of the centrally provided I.T. systems including
VT-ARC, e-mail systems, backup and storage systems, and Banner related systems.
Production control for research systems became part of Systems Support's
responsibilities in December of 2005.
- Graduated with a B.S. from Virginia Tech in 1981; continued post graduate work in programming and database architecture while working full time as data-entry operator.
- Began in I.T. as a programmer in the Virginia Tech University Libraries' Systems Office working with the Acquisitions Ordering System June 1984.
- Became Assistant Systems Manger for university's online catalog/circulation system running Virginia Tech Library System (VTLS) software April 1985
- Became Systems Manager for university's VTLS system June 1986
- Became Head of Libraries' Systems Operations Dept. October 1986
- Left University Libraries and joined Computing Center (while retaining VTLS System Manager responsibilities) December 1991
- Became E-mail system Postmaster and part of E-mail support group; June 1995
- Became supervisor of newly formed Electronic Communications & Client Tools Team of the Systems Engineering and Administration (SEA) Dept. in February 2000/Windows Administrative Services tasks added in April 2001.
- Became Manager for newly formed Network Infrastructure and Services-Systems Support Dept. (made up of personnel from the SEA Dept.) in April 2004 to the present.
- Served as Project Manager for Task Force engaged in reorganizing and restructuring Help Desk and Call Center functions into a new unit-The Customer Support Center; 2004-2005.
- Served as Chair of the Committee on Server Security as part of the VT I.T. Security Task Force; 2003-2006.
Other areas of interest include music composition and performance (in
